Stuff You Should Get #1 - YouTube5 Safari Extension
When your browser crashes. It's shit.
Avoiding browser crashes therefor is ipso-factocally awesome.
The NUMBER ONE cause of browser crashes on a Mac is the Flash Player plugin.
Flash is old.
Flash is heavy.
Flash looks at your mum when she is on the toilet.
However, Flash is useful. It makes YouTube work. It lets you play online games and all sorts of stuff.
It was designed as a way to get a rich multimedia experience in a web browser and for a long time was the only widely used way to gain such functionality.
But now we have HTML5.
HTML5 is new.
HTML5 is light.
HTML5 respects your mothers boundaries.
It doens't crash as much as Flash.
It doens't make your system work harder than it needs to, just play video from YouTube.
Personally for me Flash makes my MacBook Pro cook. The fans start going, and overheating comences shortly afterwards.
Now, one solution is the nuclear option I have taken. Which is remove the Flash Player, but a lot of people get uncomforible with this idea, and rightly so.
Not having Flash is one of the biggest gripes about the iPad. But, for me, it's one of it's perks...anyway.
For those who don't feel so keen on removing Flash all together, there is a 'middle of the road' solution.
YouTube5 by Vertical Forest
This little add-on for Safari jumps in between Flash and YouTube, and displays a HTML5 video player, and pulls in the video.
The workings of it are seamless, you need do nothing more than install it.
You still have options for quality, replay, fullscreen etc.
It looks better than the YouTube player and most importantly, I can watch more than 30 seconds of video and not have my laptop start up the jets.
And as an added bonus, it also supports Vimeo and Facebook.
